The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not charge an Entrance Fee to any state owned or operated land with the exception of Wildlife Prairie Park. Sites with Beaches charge a $1 a day per person for beach use only.

Where we have been:
Illinois and Michigan CanalIllinois and Michigan Canal
Though we have never camped along this 96 mile trail there is backpacking and camping in several areas. The trail is very rustric but mostly paved or hard-packed gravel and is excelent for hikeing or bike rideing.
Kankakee River - State Park
This is one of our favorite places to camp. It is both close to home and has all natural wooded campsites. Also located only a short distance from the Chicago Bears training camp the park is a favorite for those who wish to see the Bears and comunine with nature in one trip. Actually there are two campgrounds. The campground east of the office is well wooded and the one west of the office is open with lots of paved and pull through sites.
Shabbona Lake - State Park
Nice wooded camp areas in the first section and open grass areas in the second section. If you are into lake fishing this is the place to go. There is one nice trail if you want to take a walk in the woods.
White PinesWhite Pines Forest - State Park
White Pines has something for everyone. This is the first place we camped almost 40 years ago.
