Fractional Currency
Second Issue
October 10, 1863 to February 23, 1867
The second issue of Fractional Currency discarded the use of postage
stamps on the face of the notes. For this reason the name Postage Currency
was discontinued. The second issue incorporated a bronze oval on the face
of the note. These notes were the first currency ever printed by the US
Treasury Department. Some of these notes were printed on paper being
shipped from England to the Confederate States. This printing can be
identifed by the CSA watermark on the paper.
Denominations were 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents.
